Fans of the 49ers can breathe an enormous sigh of relief. Brock Purdy had his elbow surgery Friday morning, and it was the less-complicated kind, meaning he could be back for the start of the 2023 season.

“Quarterback Brock Purdy underwent successful surgery with renowned specialist Dr. Keith Meister this morning,” the team said in a statement. “Meister conducted an internal brace repair to Purdy’s right elbow. Purdy is anticipated to start a throwing progression program in three months.”

The full recovery time for the “internal brace” surgery has long been pegged at around six months. Week 1 is almost exactly six months away.

Though the elbow injury happened during the NFC championship game on Jan. 29, the procedure had to be delayed due to complications with Purdy’s elbow. The last announced delay happened in late February, when inflammation kept the 23-year-old from going under the knife.

The timing of this surgery does put Purdy on track to be ready for the season, though the level of his readiness will depend on how much practice time he gets. More salient is the fact that it dramatically clarifies the Niners’ offseason plans. The uncertainty of when Purdy was getting his elbow fixed might have forced the team’s hand to overspend on a veteran QB to pair with Trey Lance out of necessity. The door to bring in a veteran remains open, but now the need won’t be quite as strong when free agency begins March 15.

Despite being the last pick of the draft, and San Francisco’s original third-stringer, Purdy showed he was more than capable of leading the 49ers to glory, winning eight straight games as the team’s starter. While there’s no guarantee the Niners would have beaten the Eagles in the NFC Championship with Purdy at 100%, his presence could have at least kept things more competitive. It’d be hard to win eight consecutive games two seasons in a row regardless, but with a healed elbow, it’ll be a lot easier.
