San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy underwent successful surgery Friday to repair the ruptured ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, a league source confirmed to The Athletic. Here’s what you need to know:
- Purdy is expected to begin throwing in three months and should be recovered in six months, which will put him near a Week 1 return, the source said.
- The 23-year-old was originally slated to have surgery on Feb. 22, however, he had to postpone the operation due to ongoing swelling.

If all goes according to plan, Trey Lance will be the team’s top quarterback throughout the offseason, preseason and in Week 1 with Purdy becoming a viable option shortly thereafter. That means any veteran the 49ers sign in the coming weeks might have to serve as the No. 3 quarterback, perhaps with a stint on the practice squad.

Backstory
Purdy injured his elbow in San Francisco’s NFC Championship Game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He exited in the first quarter after taking a shot to the arm by Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick. Purdy returned in the third quarter after backup Josh Johnson entered concussion protocol, but only attempted two passes for 4 yards for the rest of the game.
Purdy told reporters he couldn’t throw the ball much more than 5 yards and called the elbow injury “extremely painful.”
The rookie ended his first season with 1,943 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in the regular season and postseason combined. The 49ers used four quarterbacks over the course of the 2022 season due to injuries: Lance (ankle injury and surgery), Jimmy Garoppolo (foot injury), Purdy and Johnson.
