David de Gea was the most high profile goalkeeper to leave Manchester United this summer – but not the only one.

Matej Kovar sealed a move to Bayer Leverkusen this week, a high profile switch where he hopes for a quicker route to first team football.

Manchester United have inserted a buy-back clause into Kovar’s sale, just in case the club want him back in the future.

But with new signing Andre Onana at the helm, United have committed to new number one, and everybody else must take a backseat, or move on like De Gea and Kovar.

De Gea wishes Kovar well

Matej Kovar was unveiled by Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, with Manchester United receiving £7.7 million for his signature.

Kovar shared a picture of him signing his Leverkusen contract, via Instagram, with the hashtag #Kovar2027 – in reference to his contract at the Bundesliga club.

He received messages from his former Manchester United colleagues, including David de Gea, who showed him a bit of love with a heart emoji. Kovar made sure to let him know he appreciated it.

Five Manchester United goalkeepers have now left

Five goalkeepers who were under contract to Manchester United last season have now left the club.

In addition to De Gea and Matej Kovar, Nathan Bishop was allowed to leave to join Sunderland on a permanent basis. He also wished Kovar well on his move to Germany.

Former loanee Jack Butland departed when his deal expired last season and signed with Rangers, where he is now the number one.

And then yesterday after Kovar’s move, United announced under-21 goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny has rejoined his former club in the Czech Republic on a permanent deal.

At present Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton are the back-ups to Andre Onana.
